Yankees Sign Seth Lugo to Minor League Deal
Former Mets Pitcher Joins New York Organization
Lugo Adds Depth to Yankees Bullpen
The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo to a minor league contract, the team announced Tuesday. Lugo, 33, was released by the Kansas City Royals last week after struggling to a 6.43 ERA in 32 appearances this season.
Lugo is a veteran of eight major league seasons, having previously pitched for the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers. He has a career 4.14 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 328 career appearances, including 102 starts.
Lugo is expected to report to the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He could provide the Yankees with a depth option for their bullpen, which has been taxed by injuries this season.
Lugo's Struggles in Kansas City
Lugo's stint with the Royals was a disappointment. He allowed 32 earned runs in 45 innings pitched, and his WHIP was a bloated 1.44. Lugo was particularly ineffective against left-handed batters, who hit .313 against him.
Yankees Bullpen Needs Help
The Yankees' bullpen has been a weak spot this season. The team's relievers have a combined 4.16 ERA, which is 16th in the American League. The Yankees have also blown 14 saves, which is tied for the most in the league.
Lugo's Potential Role with Yankees
Lugo could fill a variety of roles in the Yankees' bullpen. He has experience as both a starter and a reliever, and he can throw multiple innings if needed. Lugo's versatility could be valuable to a Yankees team that has been searching for reliable arms all season.
